Bhayandar: As the hustle and bustle of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) polls came to an end, the Election Commission (EC) would be laughing its way to the treasury by adding more than Rs 11 lakh to its kitty. The Reason: More than 56% (285 candidates) people who contested the polls have lost their deposit, as they could not manage to secure 1/8th of the total number of votes cast in their wards.
The twin-city has 95 wards for which 509 candidates had filed their nominations. While the independents topped the list with 100 candidates, the second spot was bagged by the Nationalist Congress Party with 50 candidates, which was followed by 33 from the Congress, 23 Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and 11 Sena candidates. This apart from a host of other candidates filed by smaller parties including SP, Bahujan Vikas Aghadin and Rashtriya Samaj Party. The BJP registered a resounding victory in the polls.
