Indore: Though most sought-after courses in the country, Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is struggling to find takers in Madhya Pradesh. In the first round of centralised online admission process, the programme evoked poor response from MBA aspirants.

Merely 1,880 candidates, who had taken common management admission test (CMAT) conducted by All India Council for Technical Education, against more than 20,000 vacant seats in MBA colleges across the state, applied for admission.

This figure came to fore when Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) released allotment list of CMAT candidates who registered online counselling and allocated seats in MBA courses in b-schools across the state. In Indore district alone, over 6,800 seats are lying vacant in MBA (core) programme. This means that the total number of registrations were not enough to fill even one third of the seats in MBA colleges in Indore district, forget 20,000 in state.

“Figures of CMAT candidates are disappointing. We were expecting CMAT candidates to fill at least 60 percent seats in MBA colleges in state,” said Comp-feeders AISECT college director Awdhesh Dave. The colleges, which have registered good admissions despite poor registration, include Institute of Management Studies, Prestige Institute of Management and Research, IPS Academy and IIPS.

How it works?

CMAT is an entrance test conducted by AICTE for admission in MBA courses in b-schools in MP and 14 other states. The state government fills seats in MBA courses through CMAT candidates. If seats still remain vacant after counselling for CMAT candidates, then the government allows admission to non-CMAT candidates in MBA courses on the basis of their qualifying exam scores.

“First counselling was exclusively for CMAT candidates. In the second round, both CMAT and non-CMAT candidates can apply for admissions,” said Indore division additional director (higher education) KN Chaturvedi.

The second round of counselling would start from July 19.  The registrations for second counselling would be held from July 19-27. During same period, verification for academic documents of candidates would also be done. Verification of documents is mandatory for securing admission in the course.
