Mayor hits street to recover rent, comes down heavily on shopkeepers

Ujjain : Mayor Meena Jonwal came down heavily on the shopkeepers as she hit the streets to recover the unpaid rent of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) shops, on Friday. She slapped demand notices on the shopkeepers at the flower market at Dudhtalai and Dewasgate bus stand area and warned them strictly to pay the dues at the earliest to avoid legal actions.

The shopkeepers and the owners of the shops were shocked to find the mayor in commanding mode. She straightaway served demand notices to the shopkeepers and owners of the establishments asking for the payment of their due rents. The initiative yielded enough impact as most shopkeepers instantly got ready to pay the dues.

Jonwal was earlier alerted about the unpaid rent to the tune of Rs 36.55 lakh towards the shopkeepers of the shopping complexes and markets owned by UMC that had been due for the last 10 years. These defaulters were earlier served notices by the UMC on the directives of the mayor, but yet to pay their dues.

Irked over the reluctance of the shopkeepers, Jonwal reached the flower market at Dudhtalai and Dewasgate bus stand area herself on Friday. Apart from issuing notice to some serious defaulters, she also urged others to immediately pay the due amount so that the same could be utilised for the development of the city. Shopkeepers accepted the request of the mayor and assured her to pay the dues within a week.

Jonwal served notices to 12 shopkeepers from flower market and five others from Dewasgate. Meanwhile, shopkeepers made the mayor aware about the problem of water and unhygienic atmosphere in the area, to which she directed deputy commissioner, SN Mishra to resolve the problems with priority.

Revenue committee in-charge Radheshyam Verma, health committee in-charge Satyanarayan Chauhan and others were also present with the mayor during her drive.
