The Maratha Kranti Morcha calls off Mumbai bandh. The ‘peaceful’ bandh in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane called by Maratha Kranti Morcha turned violent as the day went by. Protesters blocked the Mumbai-Pune Highway while stones were pelted and a bus was set ablaze in Mankhurd.
According to earlier reports, traffic was blocked by protesters in Thane. Tires were burnt and a bus was vandalised in the area. Workers of Maratha Kranti Morcha also block Eastern Expressway in Chembur during their agitation. Protests were also witnessed in Dadar, and shops are likely to remain closed in the area. Meanwhile, schools closed early, and some cancelled their afternoon classes.
Protesters blocked trains in Thane, Jogeshwari as well as Ghansoli, thus affecting all local railway lines. Members of Maratha Kranti Morcha also forcibly shut shops in Thane’s Gokhale Road while some workers of the organisation were seen requesting shopkeepers in Bandra to shut their shops.
Private cabs and autos were being stopped from going ahead in Kandivali. According to ANI, protesters pelted stones on two Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses near Navi Mumbai’s Ghansoli this morning. BEST bus services from Airoli to Vashi were completely stopped today in the light of Maharashtra bandh. Meanwhile, Jagannath Sonavne, a protester who attempted suicide by consuming poison yesterday in Aurangabad’s Deogaon Rangari, died in a hospital today. He was a protester in the agitation for reservation for Maratha community in government jobs and education.
