Mumbai : A 24-year-old man has sent a legal notice to the Malad Police after he was allegedly tortured and harassed by a Police Sub Inspector from the Malad Police for accepting Islam a year ago.

The victim, Sunil Keni (24) is a resident of Malad’s Chincholi Vithalpada area. Sunil, a Hindu by birth, voluntarily accepted Islam a year ago. He claims that family reasons forced him to convert. He assumed the name Mohammad Sadik.

Sadik’s mother had expired after which his father, a drunkard, married another woman. Sadik was ill-treated by his step-mother and father, following him spending more of his time at his aunt’s (father’s sister) place who is married to a Muslim. Gradually, Sadik started reading the Quran and other Islamic books and finally he decided to convert to Islam last year. His parents are said to be against his decision since he made his mind.

However, the police have a different story to say. When Free Press Journal contacted the Police, they had a different story to tell. “The boy’s parents had brought him to our police station and wanted us to tell him not to get into any other religion,” said a senior officer from Malad police station. “Everyone has the freedom to follow and practice the religion they want to and we have nothing to do with it,” he added. The senior inspector also informed that an inquiry is being conducted in the case.

Sadik has alleged that PSI Sonawale of Malad Police Station, along with some other officers, tortured him and also went to the extent of beating him up with belts and wires. He alleged that a Tilak was forcibly applied on his forehead and he was threatened by the police to apply the same daily and come to the police station every morning.

Traumatised by the treatment of police and his family, Sadik was also admitted in Jogeshwari-based hospital.

“He came to me and narrated his ordeal and on that basis I made the legal notice and have sent it to the Senior Inspector of Malad Police,” said Fakhruddin Khan, Advocate, Bombay High Court.
