Mumbai : BEST buses commuters of late are complaining about  the poor condition of buses and of the inconvenience caused due to such factors.

In order to resolve their complaints, the BEST Undertaking is renovating its buses by fabricating and mounting a new aluminum bus body. The buses getting modernised are the Tata-made CNG buses which are seven to eight years old.

The first phase of the project has renovation of 230 buses out of which 99 are already renovated and have started plying on roads (in pic). Each bus for the modification is costing around Rs 2 lakh, said BEST spokesperson, Hanumant Gofne.

The modification in the said Tata make buses mainly includes disposing the old metal sheet body  and replacing it with an aluminum steel body. The modified buses also have wider entrance and exit to pick up passengers fast. There is also increased legroom and space between twin seats. While there are Stanchion bars to all seats to help commuters for better grip during rush.

“The reason for replacing the metal sheet body with the aluminum body is that being lighter it reduces weight and it also reduces maintenance. The metal sheet buses cause high maintenance consuming lot of funds,” added Gofne. “We will soon study how economical the modernized buses are”, he added.

The BEST bus commuters are of late complaining about the condition of the Tata make buses which includes the noise of the bus, uncomfortable seats, dislocated handles, less legroom and even regular breakdown. According to a source, BEST Undertaking plans to renovate its 1000 buses to satisfy its passengers and also save funds and the aluminum body bus has low maintenance.
