Maharashtra: Unable to get married, youth stages Sholay-style stunt

Pune: Frustrated at being unable to find a life partner, an HIV-positive youth, attempted a Sholay-style stunt at Ravet in Pimpri-Chinchwad last week. He stood on top of a 50-60ft high crane at a construction site and proclaimed, “I am suffering from HIV and I want to get married. I am unable to find a girl, so help me.”

A crowd soon gathered at the spot. Some of them called the police and fire brigade, who had rushed to the spot. It took them over a hour to reason with him and bring him back to the ground. The fire brigade was tied up in another emergency and had to be pulled out of this spot to rush to the youth’s rescue. The firemen used a ladder to reach the youth. He was reluctant to climb down.

Only after the firemen assured him they would helping him find a girl he could marry, did he relent. The youth had just come to Pimpri-Chinwad on Tuesday. Originally from Nanded, he is a casual labourer. He contracted HIV at the age of 20 and this factor is making it hard for him to find a girl ready to marry him.
