Maharashtra: Sugarcane protests turn violent, vehicles set ablaze

Sangli: Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) has gone on a rampage, destroying and setting ablaze government properties in protest of allowing sugarcane factories to remain open in Sangli, while they are all shut in Kolhapur. A protest has been started by SSS demanding Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) plus Rs 200 for every tonne of sugarcane, which the BJP government has not accepted as yet.

The SSS workers went on a rampage against all sugar factories running in Sangli on Thursday night and caused most damage at the Rajarambapu Sugar Factory. SSS workers did not stop here, they went on to set ablaze trucks that were carrying sugarcane in Vaddi and Meeraj talukas. They also set on fire a tractor and office giving an extreme violent twist to this entire andolan. SSS is led by the Member of Parliament Raju Shetti.

Shetti and his workers have threatened chakkajam from November 11 and a bandh if there is no breakthrough in talks with the BJP government. “The sugar mill owners are indulging in unfair business practices at the cost of the workers,” alleged Shetti.
