Maharashtra: Leopard dies of hunger after getting ensnared

Mumbai: A leopard was killed after getting ensnared in a hunter’s trap in Ratnagiri. Preliminary investigation revealed that the leopard got caught in the trap and died of hunger. The eight year old male leopard, 200 cm long and 70 cm tall, was chasing its quarry in the Kamthe Sukai temple premises when it got entangled with a thin metal wire tied to a tree and could not escape from the trap. The villagers had spotted the leopard in the morning and shared this information with forest officials at Ratnagiri. The wire trap was set up after speaking to forest officials.Maharashtra’s track record for protection of its big cats has come under immense criticism. Tigress Avni was killed in Chandrapur on November 2, while three tiger cubs were found dead on the railway tracks in Chandrapur.
