Mumbai : The pan-Maharashtra cancer specialists called Maharashtra Cancer Warriors, in a letter written to the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has thanked the State Government for the measures taken to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the citizens of Maharashtra. The steps of your government to curb tobacco consumption in the state will dramatically reduce the burden of cancer in few years from now, reads the letter. It goes on to add that it is shocking that 2 crore people in Maharashtra are addicted to some form of tobacco that is causing epidemic proportion of fatal diseases such as heart attack, stroke apart from cancers. Mouth cancer is the commonest cancer in men in Maharashtra due to rampant chewing habit. Needless to say that the state is losing 2000 crore every year due to tobacco related illnesses.
We are already offering our voluntary services in management of cancers at several district hospitals of Maharashtra. We are also engaged in creating cancer awareness and screening of cancer in rural area. We are committed to giving our best to make Healthier Maharashtra under your leadership.
Maharashtra was the first state to ban flavored chewing tobacco and flavored supari apart from Gutka. Maharashtra government has also banned e cigarette in the state. We are happy to note that your government is contemplating banning chewing of tobacco in public place and ban on sale of lose cigarettes and bidis.
