New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi may surprise the Opposition by advancing the Lok Sabha elections from April next year to November-December this year, coinciding them with the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as part of his plan for simultaneous parliamentary and assembly elections.

He discussed the party’s preparedness in the event of the early Lok Sabha elections as also other states where the Assembly elections can be advanced at a dinner he hosted to BJP President Amit Shah and eight of the national general secretaries here Thursday night. The meeting also discussed political situation and the strategy to be adopted in the forthcoming Assembly elections first in Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya and then in Karnataka.

Sources said Modi is exploring a possibility of the simultaneous elections at every opportunity. He has asked the party leaders to begin deliberations for reaching a consensus on the matter. On Wednesday, he also urged the intelligentsia gathered at the Niti Aayog here to put pressure on the political parties to support the simultaneous polls.

He described it at the Niti Aayog meeting as the second biggest political reform in the country since Independence, the first one being the bonds for political donations to put an end to the political parties banking on black money in elections. He wants the issue debated at every forum to build up a consensus for the simultaneous polls.

A one-day seminar was organised in the Parliament House last month on the advantages of the simultaneous elections under the aegis of the Lok Sabha Speaker’s Research Initiative.

BJP Vice-President Dr Vinay Sahasrabuddhe is also planning a 2-day seminar on the issue here this month under the RSS-affiliated Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini he heads.
