Stephen Craig Paddock, the retired accountant who smuggled an armory's worth of weapons into a swank Las Vegas hotel and mowed down concert-goers from a 32nd story window, was a high-stakes gambler whose bank-robber father was once on the FBI's most wanted list. The 64-year-old had a home in a tranquil golf course retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of the gambling hub and, according to a brother, showed no sign he was poised to commit mass murder.

Las Vegas: Las Vegas police found at least eight guns in the 32nd floor hotel room from which a gunman opened fire at concertgoers below. It is understood that Stephen Paddock, the shooter, is a 64-year-old licensed pilot and hunting enthusiast with no criminal record who owned a $400,000 home in nearby retirement community.

He had no criminal record in the state of Nevada and officials said at a press conference early Monday that they are still looking into his possible motive. Paddock had committed suicide by the time police breached the door to the room from which he had opened fire. He frequently visited Las Vegas to gamble and had been staying at the hotel since September 28, according to authorities.

His 90-year-old mother was ‘in shock’ and struggling to cope with the news. Cops had located his girlfriend Marilou Danley for questioning, but don’t believe she’s involved in the shooting. Paddock was reportedly going through a divorce at the time of the shooting.  The police are looking for Paddock’s live-in companion, 62-year-old Marilou Danley. One report said she was overseas and Paddock had used her cards to gamble on slots before the tragedy.

She is believed to be an Australian citizen of Indonesian heritage. Paddock’s brother said ‘‘He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped,’’ adding that the family is ‘dumbfounded’ at the massacre and has no idea of motive. Investigations are still on and the police have not yet determined a motive. He was not believed to be connected to any militant group. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the gunman was a recent convert to Islam. But officials said there is no evidence that Paddock was connected to any international terror organization.
