IRF man Arshid Qureshi in transit remand of Kerala police till 25th July

Mumbai: Arshid Qureshi, who was arrested in a joint operation by the Kerala Police and Maharashtra ATS, has been remanded to transit remand of the Kerala Police till July 25 here by a Belapur court.

Qureshi was picked up from his Navi Mumbai residence on Thursday night and placed under arrest in connection with a case registered in Kochi on July 17.

The case was registered, days after at least 21 youths from Kerala were reported missing and suspected to have joined the Islamic State, against Yahiya, the husband of Kochi-based Merin alias Mariyam, who went missing in the Middle East about a month ago, and Qureshi, on a complaint by her brother.

Qureshi, an alleged member of Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), was arrested from Navi Mumbai for radicalising a Palakkad-based couple who reportedly  joinedDaesh.

In a statement issued here, an IRF spokesperson said Qureshi is a “Guest Relations Officer” with the organisation, but denied any “encouragement” on part of their staff to make anyone join terrorist organisation, ISIS.

“DrZakirNaik and IRF have repeatedly condemned ISIS for being anti-Islamic. No staff of IRF will ever encourage anyone to join ‘AISIS’ (Anti-Islamic State of Iraq and Syria),” the statement said.

According to an ATS official, “A complaint was filed by Ebin Jacob who had alleged that his brother-in-law Yahya, from Palakkad in Kerala, had forcibly converted his sister Merin to Islam. After the conversion, Merin’s name was changed to Mariyam. He said Qureshi and YahyaradicalisedMerin and forced her to join Daesh. Ebin has also alleged that Yahya accompanied him to Mumbai to meet Qureshi and claimed that  Qureshi was associated with IRF.”

A week ago, Qureshiwas  booked  along with  an aide YahyaPalarivottam under  Section120 B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 153A (promoting enmity between groups)  of the IPC and under relevant  sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act  in Kochi.
