Indore: VYAPAM scam Kingpin Dr Vinod Bhandari jailed, court rejects bail plea

Indore: A local court on Thursday dismissed the bail application of Dr Vinod Bhandari, the kingpin of multi-crore VYAPAM pre-PG medical examination scam and sent him to jail. Taking cognizance of chargesheet filed by Enforcement Directorate, the court said charges are serious. He was on bail in the same case.

The ED filed chargesheet in the pre-PG medical examination scam on July 13 under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. In the chargesheet, ED pointed out that Dr Bhandari laundered money to the tune of Rs 7 crore and invested this money in raising immoveable properties. After filing the chargesheet, Dr Bhandari sought bail through counsel from the court of Additional Sessions Judge Samresh Singh.

On Thursday, the hearing on bail application continued for whole day. Dr Bhandari through his counsel said money mentioned by ED does not belong to him. However, ED through counsel Prasanna Prasad stated that ED arrived at Rs 7-crore figure after investigation.

The hearing, which started at 11 am continued till 2 pm. The judge then dictated the order for three hours, which ended at 5 pm. After judge rejected his bail application, police took him to jail. ED assistant director AK Shrivastava and investigation officer Ajay Gour were present in the court. When this scam came to light, Dr Bhandari was abroad. He avoided returning to India fearing arrest.
