Indore: Using ‘garbage’, RRCAT cooks breakfast for 200 people daily

Indore: Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, a facility of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) in Indore—the cleanest city of the country, cooks breakfast to 200 people daily using biogas made out of waste generated from its residential campus.

This interesting fact came to fore during a study conducted by Prof Ganesh Kawadia and two of his associates including Assistant Professor M Vasim Khan and researcher Neha Gupta on solid waste management system at RRCAT.

Kawadia is head of MP State Planning Commission Chair at DAVV where Khan is a faculty with School of economics at DAVV. He and his team chose RRCAT’s solid waste management system for the case study as this centre’s residential campus had emerged as the cleanest campus in the city in a survey conducted by Indore Municipal Corporation last year.

To establish the mechanism used by RRCAT to deal with solid waste, Kawadia and his team conducted the study. “In our study, we discovered that the RRCAT has a very effective and comprehensive garbage management system,” said Kawadia.

He stated that the RRCAT has installed Nisarg-Runa Biogas Plant to get rid of the wet waste problem and in addition to it they are also getting biogas and manure as by-products. “The biogas is used to cook breakfast daily to around 200 people including 150 students and 50 guests, living in the guesthouse,” he said.

To promote the usage of produced biogas, the RRCAT has subsidised its price to its actual price for promoting its use and for utilising the resources optimally. “In that way, once the ret-wet considered as garbage and headache now after scientifically processing, becomes useful, and saving Rs 1 lakh per year of manure and cooking 200 persons’ breakfast daily,” Kawadia said. Therefore, RRCAT’s engineers term this management system as “Garbage to Gold”.

Gargabe collected from 1,000 households

RRCAT felt the need of biogas plant for managing the wet waste of campus in order to get rid from all sludge, uncleanliness and health issues. The idea was not to produce gas or manure, but to manage the bio degradable waste in environment friendly manner.

The premises of RRCAT has a total number of 1000 houses which produce an average 400 kg waste per day around 0.4 kg per household and around 100 kg wet waste comes from guest house. The full capacity of Nisarg Runa Biogas Plant is 1 tonne, but currently it is working on 500 kg means half of the capacity is unutilised.

RRCAT project costs merely Rs 22 per month

The RRCAT has outsourced full operational part of biogas plant on annual contract basis. This contract includes the entire process from collection the garbage to dispatch of dried manure. The contractual cost is Rs 30,000 per month. The total gas produced from garbage is worth Rs 4,800 and manure is worth Rs 6,000.

So, mathematically, the total cost of cleanliness per household comes to Rs 22 per month which is too cheap as compared to what is charged by the IMC from households in the city. IMC charges Rs 100 from each household and Rs 150 from commercial establishment as garbage collection fee.

  • Utilises produced biogas in guest house.
  • Subsidised biogas price to its actual price for promoting the usage of produced biogas in RRCAT guest house.
  • Optimally utilises manure in their own campus for maintaining the greenery.
  • Lastly, disposed water also used in gardening and in vermin culture plant.
  • Along with biogas plant, the RRCAT also operates vermiculture plant by using its own garden waste.
  • All in all, optimally utilises all natural resources and by doing so verifies the name of biogas plant.
