Putting a brake on the possibilities of repairing Jawahar Marg Bridge, the Indore Municipal Corporation has decided to raze it and construct a new one. This was decided after the bridge inspection by the officials of IMC, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Mayor Malini Gaud on Wednesday.
“The work for reconstructing the bridge will be started in 10-days. The bridge will be razed first and a new one will be constructed,” IMC’s executive engineer Anoop Goyal informed. He said that tenders for the bridge will be floated at the earliest and the work will start ASAP. IMC will complete the work of the bridge in five to six months.
“The new bridge will be 60-ft broad and 150 ft long and will be constructed with the cost of Rs 5-6 crores,” he said. Meanwhile, Mayor Malini Gaud said, “We are taking the work as an emergency and will complete it at the earliest.”She said work will be done under smart city project and IMC will ensure no problem to the residents. They also ensured smooth diversions. Officials of IMC, Lok Sabha Speaker, Traffic Police and other public representatives were busy making plans of diversion and alternative ways to get the issue of bridge fixed.
It is dangerous even to walk on it: Tai
After inspecting the bridge, Mahajan said, “The bridge is not healthy even to walk or to ride a cycle. Reconstruction of the bridge is the need of the hour and it should be done at the earliest.” Tai said that the bridge is one of the main connecting points between two parts of the city but people’s lives cannot be risked by mere repairing of the bridge.
Traffic chaos continues
Meanwhile, traffic chaos at MG Road and other connecting roads of the bridge continued on Wednesday as well. Large number of people, unaware of the bridge’s closure, was stuck by taking wrong ways while those passing through MG Road and other diversions too faced tough time in passing through the area.
Prepare two alternative roads in eight days
Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan also directed the officials of traffic police and IMC to prepare two alternative roads, connecting Jawahar Marg, in eight days. Mahajan has directed the officials to remove encroachments on the road near Katkarpura and Chandrabhaga Bridge for diversion of the routes.
