Indore: Metro runs on paper, project hits major development works in city

Indore: It has been a decade since the proposal to start metro train facility in city has been making rounds, with often creating media buzz. But strangely, the project proposal is still under process and going through various paper works, while awaiting its nod, construction works of four large scale over bridges are stopped in city creating a heavy mess.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh during his 2007-8 Assembly election campaign promised the citizens to launch metro train in the city; but since his ascension to throne it has been 10 years and only the paper work for the project has been reportedly done. The same facility was promised to Bhopal residents as well which is yet to see the light of the day.

Meanwhile, development works in the area, which falls under the proposed metro project, has been stopped at four places. Earlier, the government was planning to construct four over bridges and underpasses at these places but following their earmarking for the metro project, the works have been stopped till the final nod is given to the metro proposal.

Overview:Bhopal-Indore Light metro train project is proposed with an estimated cost of Rs 45 crore. A 90 km track covering six routes has been planned across the city with an additional estimated cost of Rs 23,000 crore. In the first phase of the project a 30 km track is proposed

Pipliyahana Square flyover

The proposed track for metro includes Pipliyahana, Palasia, Navlakha, AB Road, Airport Road and other major areas of the city. IDA has proposed a flyover and underpass in Pipliyahana area and also, submitted a detailed project report as well to the authorities concerned. However, the flyover construction work has been stopped by IDA as the metro line is proposed in the area.

Elevated bridge from MIG to Navlakha

IDA was to construct a Rs 400 crore elevated bridge from MIG to Navlakha. Recently, IDA showed a presentation of the project to Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari and even completed a survey for the project. However, the work was postponed by IDA after realising that the metro track might hamper the project.

Underpass at Shivaji Vatika Square

The heavy traffic zone of Shivaji Vatika Square had an underpass proposed and IDA had filed a detailed project report to government for approval; but the government did not approve the project as the metro track was proposed on the route as well. Chief Engineer of IDA, SS Rathor said that three big projects of IDA at AB Road corridor, Shivaji Vatika subway and Pipliyahana over bridge were postponed due to the proposed metro project. After nearly 18 months the state government approved the overbridge project at Pipliyahana Square.

Over bridge from Bada Ganpati to Airport Road

Indore Municipal Corporation has planned a four-lane bridge under the smart city project from Bada Ganpati to Airport Road. IMC has already carried out the feasibility survey for the entire area as well, but the government stopped the bridge construction work due to the proposed metro track. Smart City project in charge Anup Goyal said that the flyover proposed by IMC from Bada Ganpati has been suspended till the metro project is finalised.
