Indore: Not ready to buckle under the pressure mounted on them, students of Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT-I) on Sunday once again staged a demonstration against the institute authorities for serving them “tasteless and sub-standard” food. They reiterated their demand of cancelling the contract of Bhopal Caterers which runs the mess on the campus but to no avail. Cutting loose from their regular Sunday activities, BTech students covering their faces with handkerchiefs and holding placards in hands gathered outside the institute’s gate no. 1 marked their protest against the institute bias. The placards read slogans like “Enough Suppression”, “Save IIT Indore” and “Remove Bhopal Caterers”.
The protesting students said that institute director Pradeep Mathur was sheltering Bhopal Caterers – for reasons best known to him — and not allowing some other person to open their outlet on the campus. “The director is not ready to accept our demand of replacing Bhopal Caterers. While we find Bhopal Caterers’ food sub-standard, tasteless and overpriced, the director loves it. At least, that’s what he told us,” the students said. During conversation with students, Mathur had allegedly said that he was quiet happy with Bhopal Caterers. They also alleged that the director shut Guru Mahima canteen which was quite popular among students as they had stopped going to Bhopal Caterers. The protests by BTech students of IIT Indore over the food issue are going on for past one fortnight. The protests had started with the gherao of the director official bungalow and continue unabated till date.
UNMASKING THE MASK MYSTERY: In order to evade action, students while staging demonstration covered their faces with handkerchiefs to hide their identity. “Last time we staged a protest institute authorities had summoned parents of some of the protestors and threatened them of disciplinary action against their wards if they were found protesting again in future. We don’t want to be identified to face action and so we covered our faces,” the students said. They also alleged that the institute staff was threatening them to stop raising voices against Bhopal Caterers
