Indore: With Dussehra to be celebrated on Saturday, most ‘Navratri’ organising committee and local clubs are all set to burn effigies of Ravana as a sign of victory of good over evil.
However, a volunteer organisation in city Suryamanch has gone a step further to burn an effigy of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh donned as Ravana, following the self-styled godman’s conviction in a rape case of his woman disciple by the special CBI court about a week back.
However, the ‘Ravan dahan’ programme of the organisation received a big blow after city police on Friday served notice to the organisers, asking them to provide proper permission documents before going ahead with their plan.
A letter issued by the station in charge of MG Road police station asked the organisers to present a copy of permission from the district administration to burn the effigy of the Dera chief on Dussehra. Moreover, they have also warned the Suryamanch members that the programme can spark violence or any untoward incident in the city.
Member of the organising committee Johar Manpurwala said “Police in a letter have warned us of action if we burn the effigy of Ram Rahim. We are surprised to get such letter from police, as we have been burning effigies of people convicted of evil crimes every year for last eight years.”
“Ram Rahim has been convicted by the court in a rape case. He is also accused of many other criminal activities including murder of a witness. I don’t exactly understand why police fear about a rapist’s effigy being burnt,” he added. However, Suryamanch has decided to discuss the issue with police on Saturday morning and take a decision on the matter after it.
“We will not do anything which disturbs peace. We will talk to them (police) and present our views as well. Final decision will be taken only after the meeting on Saturday morning,” Manpurwala said.
Notably, the organisation has been celebrating Dussehra for the past 21 years, but for the last eight years they have started burning effigies of people, who have gained notoriety over Ravana. Among others, the organisation in the past had burnt effigies of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, rape accused godman Asaram Bapu and 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab.
