Mumbai : To facilitate faster infrastructural development for the Discom and Transom, the state has decided to lease out government land to them at a nominal rate of Rs 1 for 30 years, energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced at the state legislative assembly here on Tuesday.

Terming the decision ‘historic’, Bawankule said that Maharashtra is the only state in the country to take such a decision. The decision will provide a relief to both the companies which would be subsequently transferred to the people of the state in the form of lower power tariff, the minister added.

Purchasing the land for new projects at the market rates escalates project costs affecting the power tariffs, he said.
