Goa: Shocked by the state’s move to use the 1st floor of the Adil Shah Palace in Panjim as an office for its Smart City, the internationally acclaimed couturier has called on Goans to fight back. Here’s the full text of his e-mail. “Hello friends-in-arms,We have an art and culture hijacking happening in Goa that is totally against what was planned for the use of the Adil Shah Palace in Panjim. At the ongoing Serendipity Arts Festival 2018.

It came to light that administrators in the Goa government hijacked a section of the first floor of the Adil Shah Palace to use as administrative offices for the recently endowed grant to make Panjim a Smart City. (Incidentally the ground floor is used as a storage for The Goa State Museum precious collection as the barely decade long ‘new Goa State Museum is ‘sinking’ and literally stinking due to Panjim garbage mismanagement nearby. Another scandal there.

I have no idea what ‘their’ idea of Smart City is, but if it will entail just giving free WiFi in public spaces and hop on hop off buses, etc, the almost or over 100 crores will go into politico’s pockets (my personal interpretation as I have dealt with these rascals before). It was the vision of several iconic Goans like Mario Miranda and Charles Correa to use this heritage structure, over a hundred years old, solely for art, art exhibitions, culture, etc. NOT Government or government affiliated offices. This is a scandal and the offices must be thrown out.

Already much damage has been done to the structure with no regard to conservation and preservation rules for heritage buildings, by punching holes through the old walls for air conditioning, electric lines, etc. As a concerned Goan, I implore your kind office to take up this story and feature in the national press as the only thing that will make our Goan politicians wake up to reality is to see a topic being made national news to shame them.

You have so kindly helped us in the past whether it was about the Regional Plan or the shifting out of Mario’s work at Reis Magos Fort (which was restored to glory only when he advised Lady Helen Hamlyn to fund the project and restore the fort. Thanks to you the media, both plans were scrapped. As an activist for the Goan cause, I beg you to please save this monument for the sake of Goan Art and Culture. Thank you and God bless you for doing this for Goa. Cheers from Colvale, fondly from Goa”.
