Celebrate International Cat Day on August 8, by looking like a kitten beauty, writes Shikha Jain
The connection between fashion and felines started long before Karl Lagerfeld made his furry companion Choupette into a bona fide style icon. Both cats and fashion have been stereotypically associated with women. Feline physical attributes and nimble nature have inspired such terms as cat eyes, kitten heels, catwalks and pussy bows. From lovely cat patterns to sweet kitten-inspired details like cat ears, every little bit of this fashion tendency oozes girlishness and flirtatiousness.
“Cat fashion is about unabashedly celebrating the love for this feline divinity. Embrace the diva-like quality that comes with the feline species. They have always been these mystical creatures who are so intriguing. Felines have this star-like quality that appeals to me the most,” says Aniket Satam, a designer from Mumbai.
How to ace the look
The shape, structure and fluid grace of cats make a great motif. Cats of all breeds and types make a great graphic symbol of fierce elegance. “For my cat-inspired collection, I referred to the real life documentary called Grey Garden based on Edith Bouvier who was infamous for dwelling in a mansion with her 400-odd cats. I have embroidered cats on separates, dresses and even had hand-painted portraits of cats on some pieces,” says Aniket. One can also use cats’ paw as an interesting graphic motif. And to make your outfit more intentional, opt for a pair of cat-inspired ballet flats or loafers. It refreshes your basic pieces instantly and reflects your quirky and playful personality.
Cat eye glasses became popular in the 1950s with their feline inspired style. The glasses were originally created to be worn only with optical lenses, but it was the hugely famous actress, Audrey Hepburn who kicked off the trend.
“In terms of accessories, incorporate cat’s eye gemstone for that surreal look,” adds Aniket. It is also a stylish way of wearing the trend without going overboard.
Your cat-eye wings don’t have to be thin and precise. Go graphic and make them thicker and slightly smudgy. “Start your cat-eye wing in the centre of your eyelid and work your way out into a dramatic flick. One can even use a black eyeliner to line the top of your lash lines, while doubling up the wings with multiple shades of pastel liner,” suggests Karen Richard, a make-up artist from Hyderabad.
For a cat-inspired hairstyle, Karen suggests, “Grab a piece of your hair off to the side and twist it. Curl the hair around itself to form a base and wrap a flat piece of hair around the base. Then secure it with bobby pins.” Sport this whimsical cat ears’ look to add charm and grace.
Dos and don’ts
Tiger, jaguar, cheetah are all from the cat family itself. All these animal skins are major print trends for Fall 2018. “Don’t overdo the motif, select one focal point and have a cat motif either embroidered, printed or painted. Another interesting way to incorporate cats is by sporting cat’s skin. Don’t dress up top to bottom in cat-inspired pieces. Avoid a cat collage repeat unless it’s a pyjama. An oversized sweatshirt or a statement dress with huge cat applique surely is a head-turner,” advises Aniket.
