Mumbai : This year First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions will happen only through the online mode. Those students who do not manage to get a college seat even after three rounds of college allocations, will go through online counselling to get a seat.

This year the education department has brought minority quota seats that amount to 50%, management seats amounting to 5% and in-house quota seats (reserved for admissions of students from their own schools) amounting to 20%, under the online mode.

Earlier those students who did not manage to get a seat even after the third round would go directly to colleges and get a seat. That way their admissions happened offline. “The online counselling will be done manually and won’t be computerised, because there will not be many students in need of it,” said B. B. Chavan, deputy director, education, Mumbai region. In the three rounds before that, allocation happens using a software.  During online counselling, students will be able to view on the department website which colleges have vacant seats. They will be allotted seats manually as per merit.

Last year, of the 2.64 lakh students who had registered for online FYJC admissions, 70,000 had opted out of it after the first round itself to secure admissions offline into colleges. A student has to give options of 35 colleges of his or her preference in the online admission system.

“Some students in the 50% range give preference for very prestigious colleges. These are the students who fail to get seats. But by and large, since students fill in 35 options most of them manage to get a seat somewhere,” said Rajendra Ahire, assistant director of education, Mumbai region.  This move is aimed at bringing transparency in FYJC admissions after a HC directive a last year while hearing PIL. The court had questioned the education department as to why it allowed offline admissions for FYJC.
