From FPJ archives: When Sunil Dutt and Murli Deora contested Lok Sabha elections in 1984

Voting is underway in Mumbai for six constituencies as part of Lok Sabha elections 2019. Among the Congress candidates in fray are Priya Dutt from Mumbai North Central, who is taking on BJP’s Poonam Mahajan, and Milind Deora who is representing South Mumbai against Shiv Sena’s sitting MP Arvind Sawant.

But do you know both Priya and Deora’s fathers Sunil Dutt and Murli Deora had contested for the Congress back in 1984, when the party registered a massive victory on the back of a sympathy wave for Indira Gandhi who had been brutally assassinated?

The above picture shows Sunil Dutt and Murli Deora celebrating their victory in the elections. While Dutt defeated Ram Jethmalani, Deora was the victorious candidate from South Mumbai (then Bombay).

While Priya Dutt and Milind Deora have both gone on to achieve victories in the past, whether they can carry on their parents’ legacy remains to be seen.
