FIFA World 2018 tournament ended on a high note with a spectacular final between Croatia and France. France scored twice in each half as they thumped combative maiden finalists Croatia 4-2 in a dramatic final at the Luzhniki Stadium to win the FIFA World Cup for the second time in 20 years. France had earlier bagged the trophy during the FIFA World Cup 1998. There are a lot of interesting facts for France and Croatia in FIFA World Cup tournaments of 1998 and 2018. Let’s have a look at them.

Didier Deschamps- The only French man to lift World Cup as a player and manager

Didier Deschamps, who was the manager of French team in the present World Cup tournament, was also a part of French team in the 1998 FIFA world cup. Didier Deschamps was the captain of the French team in 1998 and he led his team to victory after defeating Brazil by 3-0 in the finals. Didier has become only the third person ever to win the tournament as a player and as a manager. Mario Zagallo of Brazil and Franz Beckenbauer of West Germany are the others to achieve this incredible honour.

Zagallo won the World Cup as a player twice with Brazil, in 1958 and 1962. He then guided his country to the World Cup glory in 1970, when Brazil beat Italy 4–1 in the finals. Similarly, Franz Beckenbauer helped West Germany to bag world cup title in 1974. He then was manager of West Germany in FIFA World Cup 1990, and West Germany won the trophy by defeating Netherlands 2–1 in finals.

France remains unbeaten 1998 and 2018

France bagged the World Cup title in 1998 and 2018. Interestingly, France was also unbeaten in both the tournaments. France did not face a single defeat during FIFA World Cup 1998, and this again happened in the FIFA World Cup 2018. In their journey to bag to title in FIFA World Cup 1998, France defeated every team it faced. Thus remained unbeatable in the tournament. Similarly, French side was unbeatable during the FIFA World Cup 2018 too, and they faced zero defeats in the tournament. There was only one match against Denmark during group stages, which ended in a draw by 0-0.

France defeats Croatia both the times

Croatia was unbeaten in the FIFA World Cup 2018 before the final against France. France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final of FIFA World Cup 2018. Interestingly, France also crushed Croatia 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 1998 in the semi-finals. Therefore, France was the reason behind Croatia’s ultimate defeat in both the World Cup tournaments.

Croatia makes World Cup debut as France lifts trophy

There is also a link between Croatia and France during the 1998 World Cup. France won their first World Cup trophy in 1998, and it was the also the debut World Cup tournament for Croatia. Croatia, which was formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991, competed in the World Cup tournament for the first time in 1998, the same year France won their World Cup title for the first time.

Kylian Mbappe born the same year France bags 1st World Cup title

French player Kylian Mbappe, who won the young player of the tournament award in FIFA World Cup 2018, was born in the same year France lifted their debut World Cup trophy. 19-year-old Mbappe was born in 1998, the year France claimed their debut FIFA World Cup trophy after beating Brazil in final.
