Mumbai : The world of English literature in Mumbai had a huge loss on Saturday with the demise of eminent professor Eunice de Souza. The 77-year-old professor will always be remembered for her lectures, poems, writing and her efforts that helped students understand and appreciate English language.
De Souza, published four volumes of poetry, two novels and edited several anthologies of poems and essays. She served as the Head of the Department of English in St Xavier’s and ended her teaching career of 30 years in 2000. Students and teachers remember her literary work and also her lessons in class as she helped every student to grow into a matured individual.
Born in 1940 to a Goan Catholic family in Pune, Eunice de Souza studied English literature and received her Master of Arts (MA) degree from the Marquette University in Wisconsin, and a PhD from the University of Mumbai. Her funeral will be held on August 2 at St Anthony Church, Vakola at Santa Cruz (East) at 3:30pm.
