Drunk driving mishap: Pillion rider killed, scooterist nabbed

Mumbai: A 31-year-old biker was arrested on Thursday for causing the death of a man riding pillion on his two-wheeler and injuring a pedestrian in an accident on Wednesday night. The accused was inebriated at the time of the accident. According to police, the accident occurred opposite Sheriya Baug on Ramchandra Bhatt Marg, Umerkhadi at 10.10 pm. The accused Mahesh Pradeep Kesani (31) was driving the scooter while his friend Rakesh Chandra Goud (27) was riding pillion.

An inebriated Kesani hit Asavari Pramod Gavande (19), a pedestrian. Due to the collision, Rakesh, the pillion rider fell. He was crushed under the rear right wheel of a moving truck.He was rushed to Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Sudhakar Kamble, inspector, Dongri police station, said, “An FIR was registered on Thursday. The accused Mahesh Kesani was arrested on Thursday evening. His medical examination was conducted at the Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy Hospital. As per the medical report, he was drunk at the time of the accident.”

Kesani was arrested at 6pm for causing the death by negligence (Section 304(A)), causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (Section 337) and rash driving or riding on a public way (Section 279) of the Indian Penal Code. Asavari sustained injuries on her limbs. Rakesh brother Vikas Chandra Goud (32) is the complainant. Rakesh lived with brother and parents at Reshamwala building, Dongri.
