Don’t portray me like a hero: Gawli told Arjun

Arjun Rampal’s transformation as Arun Gawli is undoubtedly praise worthy. Releasing the teaser of his upcoming film along with the Gawli family, Arjun seems excited about his solo lead film. His last film Rock On 2 did not fare well at the box office hence Arjun has been hopeful that this film may bring him success.

Daddy, the film is based on the life of gangster Arun Gawli and Arjun clearly states that Gawli asked him to not portray him on screen like a hero. “When I met Arun briefly after he was out on parole, he told me don’t portray me like a hero. That is not what I want. What I have done is done. I have served my time and punishment for it,” revealed Arjun.

Choosing Arun Gawli as the subject of the film, Arjun says that Gawli’s story made for an interesting watch for the audience. “We make a film because we believe in a story and think it will be an interesting watch. You don’t have to necessarily get into preaching every time you make a film. In that case, one should write a book or documentary which people will come and watch and learn. If your characters are real, you take a lot out of them.”

A gangster made by circumstances, Arun Gawli ruled the streets of Mumbai for a long period of time. Hethen ventured into politics, initially with Shiv Sena and later forming his own party.

He has been arrested several times for criminal activities and detained for long periods during trial. However, he could not be convicted in most of the cases as witnesses would not depose against him for fear of retaliation. He was finally convicted for murder of Shiv Sena leader Kamalakar Jamsandekar by a court in August 2012. Gawli and eleven others were found guilty of Jamsandekar’s murder.

Having researched about Gawli and after meeting him and his family, Arjun says he learnt a few aspects of life that he wouldn’t have learnt otherwise. Arjun said, “I have learnt a lot about circumstances and what it can do to individuals and how lucky certain people while some are unlucky.” While Arjun stands 6.1 foot tall, ArunGawli is shorter than him hence Arjun had to shed nine kilos to achieve the slim look and also a few other things to look shorter.
