Mumbai: Bollywood veteran Dilip Kumar has sent a defamation notice to city-based developer Sameer Bhojwani for misleading the public about the ownership of the actor’s Bandra-based bungalow. The actor, along with his actress wife Saira Banu, has demanded Rs 200 crore as damages from Bhojwani for making false and defamatory claims regarding ownership of their bungalow.
This comes after Bhojwani on December 21, 2018, published a public notice in a leading newspaper, claiming to be the ‘rightful owner’ of the Bandra Pali-Hill based bungalow, worth Rs 250 crore. The developer, who is also facing a criminal case in this matter, further claimed in his notice that 96-year-old Dilip Kumar was only a lessee of the property.
The actor couple objected to this and accordingly sent a legal notice through their advocate Jitendra Shah. The notice issued on December 31 states, “Bhojwani has damaged the reputation of Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu in public by making false and defamatory statement regarding the ownership of their bungalow. He is claiming ownership of the property, only on the basis of forged and fabricated documents.
The property is originally owned by Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu since September 1953,” the notice reads.In his notice, Dilip Kumar has also cited the criminal case, he had lodged with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police, against Bhojwani and others for criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, in January 2018.The six-page notice further highlights the charge sheet filed by EOW against Bhojwani.
The charge sheet states Bhojwani had claimed ownership on the property on the basis of forged documents,” the notice issued by Kumar reads.The notice further states, “Bhojwani issued the public notice on December 21, 2018 with a criminal intention to grab/encroach the legitimate rights of Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu by creating a perception in public at large that he (Bhojwani) is owner of the property.”
