MUMBAI : Leaders across the political spectrum in the MCGM group leader’s meeting on Friday strongly opposed civic chief Ajoy Mehta’s intervention in controlling the municipal councillors’ rights.

Therefore, a code of conduct was proposed for the elected representatives giving the civic chief power to disqualify them. The decision was taken following distractions happening at the time of the general body meetings of the civic body.

In February early this year when the massive fire had engulfed the Deonar dumping ground, the opposition party members had carried a bag full of garbage in the civic general body meeting and dumped the garbage on the Mayor’s desk.

The group leaders have demanded a committee to be formed to be chaired by Mayor Snehal Ambekar and top leaders who will frame a policy after which it will be sent to the State Urban Development department for further execution.

Section 36 (A) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, states that the Mayor has the power to order councillors to leave the House for their misbehaviour.
