Mumbai: A commuter died after falling off from a moving train at Kalwa, near Thane, when a miscreant tried to snatch his cell phone. The incident occurred on August 19.In a video captured by closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) on the station premises, a man is seen snatching a commuter’s mobile phone as the latter is hanging off the footboard of a moving train. This caused the commuter to lose his balance and fall off the train just as reached the end of Platform No 4 at Kalwa Station.
The commuter sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed to them at the local civic hospital.Further probe in the case revealed that the miscreant had been looking for potential victims, standing near the edge of platform. The modus operandi was to snatch a comm-uter’s phone just as the moving train picked up pace, Government Railway Police (GRP) said. Statistics have revealed that in 2017 a total of 18,000 mobile theft cases were registered. On an average, 100 such cases are registered every day, said a GRP official. Most people do not bother to register complaints of such thefts.
