Outrage over Unnao, Kathua rape cases

Mumbaikars protest against the government’s ‘inaction’ in Kathua and Unnao rape incidents, across the city. The citizens’ protest rally demanding justice for Khatua and Unnao rape victims and immediate arrest of the culprits.

Mumbai : The members of the Christian community and parishioners have decided to protest in support of the eight-year-old Asifa Bano, who was raped and murdered in Kathua City of Jammu and Kashmir.

Some of the city church parishioners have requested people in a circular to wear black colour and visit churches to condemn Unnao and Kathua rape cases.

“In recent days the rape of a four year old girl and a twenty year old woman in JK and UP has left this nation enraged and heart broken,” reads the circular.

Parish priests said humanity was pushed to its limits in these brutal rapes. “Raping a child for years and killing it eventually, and to top it, the government trying to defend the culprits, humanity has been thrown out of the window. The soul of the nation has been played with. One cannot be a citizen of India if does not have an opinion today,” said Father Warner D’souza, Parish priest, St Jude’s Church in Malad.

“There is no question about someone being from another religion. The Church has always been vocal and have extended support to the people affected,” Father D’souza said, adding that wearing black and lighting candles is a start that may kindle fire into people to take action.

Community members believe each and every citizen of the country should come up and speak up against such heinous crimes.

“Even if it is symbolic, people should express themselves in every way possible. Although there is no decree, it is just a request and a noble gesture. This is the least we can do for the bereaved families,” said Melwyn Fernandes, a Thane resident and activist.

Maha Cong to hold candle-light protests

The Congress’ Maharashtra unit will hold candle-light protests across Mumbai and Maharashtra on Sunday to protest against the recent horrifying rape incidents in Unnao and Kathua. Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam will lead a procession in the suburbs at 6 am, followed by a similar march by state Congress chief Ashok Chavan in Thane at 7 am. Besides, all the district units of the party all over the state shall also undertake similar marches.
