Indore  :  Doctors of CHL Hospital conducted a rare and complex surgery on a 9-year-old boy suffering from atlanto-occipital dislocation, a rare defect of head and neck joint.

They claimed that it was one of its kind surgery in Central India and the patient was turned down by doctors in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and other states.

According to Dr Pranav Ghodgaonkar, “The patient Ayush, a resident of Rajasthan, approached us in December with the rare defect.”

Patient was suffering from atlanto-occipital dislocation

The senior neurosurgeon said over a period of three years, the patient had started facing difficulty in walking and standing as his neck gradually turned backwards and also started aching.

The patient was unable to get up from bed on his own for the last 4-6 months and couldn’t even sleep straight as his neck was bent backwards.

“His spinal cord was pressed badly by the abnormal bone. This abnormality is congenital defect, which manifests later in life and if we talk about the incidence it is 20 per a million people as far as Indian data is concerned,” Dr Ghodgaonkar said.

After the surgery, which took four hours, the patient is healthy and can do his routine work.
