Mumbai: The Thane police have seized documents of around 60 employees who worked for Jagdish Kanani, an aide of the mastermind Sagar Thakkar alias Shaggy in the multi-crore call centre scam.
According to Parag Manere, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Thane, “We have seized around 50-60 forms containing the names, designations, addresses, contact numbers of the employees working for Jagdish Kanani, an aide of Sagar Thakkar. The documents will help us to establish the nexus with the mastermind Sagar Thakkar. The matter is being further probed.”
Kanani (33), owner of one of the seven illegal call centres that ran out of the Hari Om IT Park off Western Express Highway in Mira Road, was picked up from his residence in Borivali on Sunday night.
A police officer on condition of anonymity said, “We have been interrogating the accused Jagdish Kanani to find out his links with the mastermind Sagar Thakkar.” While the police raided the two call centres, they were surprised to find that Kanani had arranged for all the employees at the two call centres to stay in a colony in Malad West. The police are finding out the rationale behind the arrangement.
“Kanani had arranged for rented accommodation for the nearly 30-35 employees working at the two call centres owned by him and operating out of eight units in Prestige Industrial Estate at Orlem and three shops from Western Edge II unit in Borivali,” said an official.
Jagdish grew up in Chennai where his father is a businessman. He worked in a multinational Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) for some time before shifting to Ahmedabad.
The police are also on the lookout for the mastermind Sagar Thakkar and his sister Reema who are said to be the masterminds of the scam. However, the police have not yet been able to trace Thakkar’s accomplices: Tapesh Gupta, Akhi-lesh Singh, Rahul Dogra, Jimmy and Haider. A team comprising of 160 police personnel, including 40 officials, swooped down on fake call centres in Mira Road.
