Bitter Pill: City drug inspectors cannot take ‘direct’ action against pharma cos

Indore: Indore is the commercial capital of the state and is central India’s hub for pharmaceutical companies as well. Along with getting a tag of fast-developing hub in pharmacy, the city has also been facing the ugly marks for involvement in supply of banned drugs as large number of banned drugs was seized in city.

However, the city drug inspectors of Food and Drug Administration Department are helpless to act ‘directly’ against any of the pharmaceutical companies and cannot even serve any notice to them. Meanwhile, the food safety officers are taking action against food manufacturers and retailers both and even serving notices to them as well. In a reply of an RTI, “Food and Drug Administration office in Indore mentioned that Indore office doesn’t send any notice or letter to the pharmaceutical companies and the same is done by the Bhopal office only.” According to department sources, “Drug inspectors have to send a report to Bhopal for inspection or any action to be taken.

The officers of Bhopal decide to take action over the report send by city inspectors.” Sources added that the city officials cannot directly take any action against the companies which provide an undue advantage to the companies. On the other hand, food safety officers are continuously acting against food manufacturers and also serving notices to them without any hassle. “Yes, we are taking action against manufacturers if they violate the norms.

We can serve notices to them as well. Chief Medical and Health Officer is our designated officer and he issues notices when required,” food safety officer Manish Swami said. Meanwhile, Drug Inspector Ashok Goyal couldn’t be contacted over the issue as he didn’t respond the call over actions taken against pharmaceutical companies and didn’t respond the message as well.
