BHOPAL: Four months after the death of former leader of opposition Satyadev Katare, the meeting to elect leader of opposition in state Assembly prior to budget session will be held on February 20. Union minister Ajay Makan and state in-charge Mohan Prakash will be present in the meeting on behalf of the party high command.
With the beginning of the exercise to elect leader of opposition, political activities have intensified in the Congress. Besides deputy leader of opposition Bala Bachchan, leaders like Mukesh Nayak, Ramnivas Rawat, Ajay Singh and Mahendra Singh Kalukheda are also amongst the contenders. Amidst speculations of Kamalnath taking charge of state Congress, the claim of Bachchan has weakened. Bachchan is said to be from Kamalnath camp, hence there is remote possibility of Bachchan becoming leader of opposition.
At the same time, the claim of Mukesh Nayak and Ramnivas Rawat has strengthened. Rawat is known to be close to Scindia. If Scindia camp gets importance, then it is sure that he would forward either name of Rawat or Mahendra Singh Kalukheda. As of now, Nayak does not have any allegiance to any camp. Nayak and Makhan are said to have good rapport and the former may get its advantage. Mahendra Singh may be backed by former chief minister Digvijay Singh but it seems difficult that this time he would get support from MLAs. Congress MLA Tarun Bhanot said we have left this decision to the party high command and we would accept any decision taken by it.
