Bhayandar: The Thane (rural) police returned stolen booty worth more than Rs 32 lakh including gold ornaments, bikes and other vehicles to their rightful owners at a distribution ceremony held in Bhayandar in the presence of SP Dr. Shivaji Rathod and Additional SP Sanjay Patil on Tuesday evening.
The stolen ornaments, including gold chains, mangalsutra and earrings worth Rs 25 lakh, three four wheelers, an auto-rickshaw and 17 bikes which had been lifted from the various parts of the twin-city were returned to the 35 rightful owners, police said.
Most of the victims could not believe their luck at getting back the valuables for which they had given up all hope. “I never thought I would get back my gold chain, my trust in the police has doubled after this,” said a woman while thanking cops for recovering her stolen chain. “I was hesitant to even lodge a police complaint but the cops were very co-operative,” she added.
Others shared similar feelings while getting back their valuables.
Interestingly, the Thane (rural) police had bagged the top spot in the state in respect to restitution of stolen property last year.
Although the judicial process is lengthy and cumbersome, the police banked upon the provisions in Code of Criminal Procedure to return the recovered movable property to the concerned complainants after due verification and completion of all formalities.
