Mumbai : Creative director Barun Kashyap was arrested from Chembur on Tuesday morning after an investigation by Mumbai police found his allegation of harassment by cow vigilantes to be ‘baseless’ and a ‘cooked up story’ intended to defame a particular community.

The SUV in which Kashyap was travelling was also initially seized by the Mumbai police and its driver, who works for AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon, was detained. The crime branch involved in the investigation escorted the SUV to Amboli police station, where the FIR is lodged against Kashyap. The driver was later allowed to go with the SUV after his statement was recorded.

The 24-year-old Kashyap in his complaint had alleged that he was heckled by a group of cow vigilantes in the city on August 19 when he was on his way to work in Andheri in an auto-rickshaw, whose driver warily checked if his ‘leather bag’ was made of cowhide. In his complaint, Kashyap mentioned that the driver steered the auto-rickshaw near a temple and beckoned three people, who came to Kashyap to look into if the ‘leather bag’ was made of cowhide.

Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe told this newspaper, “A special team was formed to investigate the whole matter. He has been arrested after rigorous enquiry into the matter for almost one and a half months. Barun has been arrested as our detailed investigation found his allegation to be baseless and incorrect.”

After that a legal opinion was sought before booking him for promoting enmity between groups and use of lawful power of a public servant to injure or annoy any person, said DCP Dudhe, adding that Kashyap will be produced before a court on Wednesday.

A highly placed source in Mumbai police told The Free Press Journal that Mumbai Police is trying to find out why Barun stirred up a controversy by cooking up a story that maligned a particular community, and if any political party is using him to provoke social unrest in the city.

Meanwhile, AAP’s Menon alleged that Mumbai police has ‘framed Barun in a false case’. “The 24 year old boy was threatened by Daya Nayak, who is attached to Amboli police station, to change his original statement that was made on August 20. The boy was also threatened by the ACP and Senior PI of Amboli police station on September 30. He was threatened, he feared for his life and so he signed on anything that Daya Nayak said,” Menon said.

Daya Nayak is infamous as an encounter cop. “Tuesday morning Barun came to me again and I was getting him dropped to the lawyers’ in my car by my driver Roshan.

The police swept down on them in Chembur and arrested both Barun and my driver,” said Preeti. “The dramatic police crackdown took place hardly 500 metre away from my house in Chembur. I am going to lodge a complaint against Daya Nayak that he stole my vehicle,” Menon told The Free Press Journal.

Explaining how she came in contact with Barun, Menon said, “This boy took my number from a person known to me and called me and said that ‘I am in trouble’. So I told him to come and meet me. He came to me on Sunday and told his entire story.” The sources privy to the investigation told The Free Press Journal that the city police have enough evidence to prove that Barun lied. “We have electronic evidence to prove our stand and electronic evidence never lies,” said the source.
