Gandhinagar : The sordid story of Dana Majhi, who was forced to carry the body of his dead wife on his shoulders in Odisha, has been repeated in Gujarat.

The incident took place in the tribal Dangs district in south Gujarat where one Balabhai Tadvi was compelled to carry the body of his 14-year old nephew on his shoulders till some local people intervened and arranged for a private vehicle to take them to his native village in the Panchmahals district in central Gujarat.

As the news of a repeat of Dana Majhi in the BJP’s progressive Gujarat spread like wild fire, the district collector ordered an inquiry and asked the mamlatdar (revenue officer) of the area to submit a detailed report on the circumstances that led to the doctor in-charge of the Waghai community health centre to refuse a transport facility to the poor tribal to carry the body of his dead nephew to his native village.

According to the reports received here, the 14-year old Minesh Palash who hails from Kholajar village in Dhanpur taluka of the Panchmahals district had migrated with his parents to Waghai, the district headquarter of Dangs, in search of work. Minesh fell sick and was admitted at the state government-run community health centre in Waghai where he died.

Balabhai said he had requested the health centre in-charge Dr Saroj Patel for an ambulance or a dead body van to carry the body of his nephew but the doctor refused stating that the ambulance driver was on leave. He said he also requested the doctor to allow to keep the body at the health centre for some time till he could arrange for some money to hire a private vehicle but was told that he would have to “take the body this very minute.”

Having no option, Balabhai picked the body on his shoulders and set out for the place where his other relatives were working in the town.
