Mumbai : Men’s fifth seed Sandeep Dive of Mumbai Suburban and women’s second seed Ayesha Mohd. of Mumbai City emerged champions, in the 2nd Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Joint District Carrom Tournament.
Dive, who shocked top seed Riyaz Akbar Ali of Air India in the semi-finals, rallied from a late challenge to overcome sixth seed Girish Tambe of Mumbai City 25-8, 7-25, 25-14 in an exciting championship round, while a supremely confident seven-time state champion Ayesha Mohd. of Jain Irrigation dominated the women’s final to beat top seed Kajal Kumari of Indian Oil 25-2, 25-7.
After dropping the opening set, Tambe, who upset second seed Pankaj Pawar in the quarter-finals, made amends by forcing the decider with an impressive clearance in the eighth board of the second set, after missing the queen in the fifth board.
Tambe fell behind 3-14 in the third and final set when Dive was racing ahead but recovered brilliantly in the seventh board to close in at 14-19 that kept his hopes alive. But a missed opportunity by Tambe gave Dive his moment to effect a clearance as he sealed victory in the eighth board.
