AIU officers seize valuables at Mumbai airport

Seizure includes diamond-studded rings, gold chains & bricks, foreign currencies, used iPhones

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers have detected various cases at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai in the last 48 hours and have seized gold chains, gold bricks, diamond studded gold rings, foreign currencies and 176 used iPhones.

“One passenger named Drastamat Vardanyan holding Armenian passport no. BA 2054985 who had arrived from Dubai by EK 500 was intercepted. He was found carrying 1,227 grams of crude gold chain on his person. The gold totally valued at Rs 33,98,238 was seized, passenger was arrested and case was booked,” said Pradnyasheel Jumle, deputy commissioner of customs, AIU.

In another case, a passenger named Khan Mohammed Kaiser, who had arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight no. IX248, was intercepted, said the officer. Kaiser was found carrying 2 gold bars of 10 tolas each totally valued at Rs 6,42,435. “Khan Jamshed Amiruddin who was going to depart to Dubai by EK 509 was intercepted. He was found carrying 5000 USD and 8750 UAE Dirhams.”

Meanwhile, the AIU officers also intercepted passenger Rameshbhai who had arrived from Dubai by Jet Airways flight No 9W537. “He was found carrying four diamond studded gold rings totally valued at Rs 6,20,000.”

AIU intercepted a female passenger Nafisa Mohamed Abubakr holding Indian passport no. J-7729432 arrived from Dubai by flight no.9W-543. “Personal search of passenger resulted in recovery of three gold bars totally weighing 288 grams and totally valued at Rs 7,97,630 concealed in rectum. A case was booked.

The officers of AIU rummaged and searched the Indigo Airlines Flt. No. 6E- 062 at Remote Bay No. R5. The rummaging resulted in the recovery of 06 Gold Bars of 10 tolas each totally weighing 699.828 grams provisionally valued at Rs 19,38,209.

“An unclaimed seizure case was made of the gold which was cleverly concealed inside the cavity of the horizontal pipe frame below the passenger seat,” said the officer.

One pax named Sajid Yakub holding Indian passport no. H0074458 arriving from Addis Ababa by flight no. ET 610 was intercepted. He was found carrying 176 used IPhones of various make and models, totally valued at Rs 16,63,000. Goods were seized and case was booked.
