After Marathas quota stir, now Dhangar community demands ST status; to hold rallies, marches from August 1

After Maratha quota stir, now Dhangar community has demanded that they should be included in the scheduled tribe (ST) category like Dhangars in other states, so they get 7% of the total reservation. The Dhangars are planning to hold rallies and marches from August 1 in protest to put pressure on the government.

Gopichand Padalkar, president, of Yashwant Kranti Sena and organiser of the march, told Hindustan Times, “Other states have given reservation to the Dhangar and Dhangad communities under ST. During the Congress regime, the state had sent a report to the Centre, stating Dhangads in the state is part of ST. On filing an RTI query, we found there are no Dhangads in the state. We want Dhangars to be treated as Dhangars. The protest will continue until we are given certificates of reservation under ST. The governments in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha have sent a resolution for reservation to the Centre. We want Maharashtra government to send a similar resolution to the Central government.”

According to the leading daily, the Dhangar community consists 10-12% of the entire state population. Currently, Dhangar community falls under nomadic tribe category which has 3.5% reservation in government jobs and education, but now they want to be included in the scheduled tribe category, so they can get 7% of the total reservation.
