New Delhi : The GM mustard controversy has once again erupted. After the environmentalists had opposed it, now a large number of doctors have come out in the open to oppose the GM variety for its apparent health hazards on citizens.

A large number of eminent and senior medical professionals have come together to write to Narendra Modi against the Government’s possible approval of ‘environmental release’ or of permitting commercial cultivation of the genetically modified (GM) mustard hybrid seed and of the parallel lines.

Two social and health NGOs — Doctors for Food Safety and Bio-Safety and Initiative for Health & Equity Society — represented by health experts, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, gynaecologists, clinical phamaracologists, etc from New Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Punjab have written to the PM saying, “several reports are available about serious environmental crisis that is unfolding in some South African countries after they adopted herbicide tolerant GM crops on a large scale.”’

Former Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss and Dr Vallabh Bhai Kathiria, an ex-minister of state for health from Gujarat have endoresed the appeal, besides many practicing medicine professionals.

Led by environmentalist and public health volunteer Dr Mira Shiva, the doctors’ community has warned the PM against the long term effects of GM mustard which she says is a danger for cultivators, agricultural workers and consumers.
