5-day Uma-Sanjhi festival begins with traditional rituals

Ujjain : The 5-day festival of Uma-Sanjhi began with the traditional worship of Goddess Uma at the Mahakaleshwar temple, on Saturday.

Administrator of Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee (MTMC),  Kshitij Sharma along with his wife performed the ‘pooja’ in the presence of other members, including Vibhash Upadhyay, Preeti Chouhan and priests of the temple. A 30 kilogram brass idol of Goddess Uma was also placed at the temple ‘sabha-mandap’, which will be worshipped during the course of festival.

 Later, priests made ‘sanjha’ motifs on an ancient stone in which the ‘rangmahal’ of the Goddess was depicted. Many cultural events will be hosted during the festival. The first performance was given on percussion by Gagan Singh Bais and group at Mahakal pravachan hall. Gagan Singh Bais performed on the ‘pakhawaj’, dholak, tasha and ‘dhaf’, while group member Inder Singh Bais performed on the ‘nagada’, tasha, ‘dhapla’, deru; Mangilal Chouhan on ‘ghanta’ and ‘ghadiyal’; Umashankar on sitar, Nilesh Manohar on harmonium amongst others. This was followed by a yoga presentation on Shiv mantra by Pankaj Sharma.

 The last performance of the evening was rendered by Kathak dancer Swarnika Joshi. She began with the Shiv vandana ‘Om Namah Shivay’ followed by ‘thumri’ ‘khele hari braj ke sang’. Other performances included rendition of folk songs of ‘sanjha’, folk dance and aarti of Lord Mahakal. Aditi Dubey, Darshana Raom Kratika Joshi and Apurva Paal accompanied Swarnika.

 Balkrishna Dholibua’s bhajan programme began on Saturday, and will on continue all 5 days of the festival in the temple premises at 5 pm. The first day of the festival was concluded with ‘vasant-pooja’ after the bhajan.
