Mumbai: A 46-year-old woman has received a heart transplant at Fortis Hospital after she received a cadaver donation from another patient. This was the 34th heart transplant to be carried out at this hospital.
Hospital sources said that the donor, a 44-year-old woman who was admitted to a city hospital was suffering from intra cerebral bleed and brain stem haemorrhage. She was later declared brain dead, her family later consented for a cadaver donation.
Following this, the traffic police had organised a green corridor due to which the heart was transported from Jaslok Hospital to Fortis Hospital within 24 minutes. The liver that was donated went to a patient from Global Hospital.
The recipient, who was suffering from dilated cardio myopathy, had been on the waiting list since last month. The transplant was conducted by Dr Anvay Mulay, Chief of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund in Mumbai.
According to Dr Mulay, “the surgery was successful. The patient is now stable and would be kept under observation for next 48 to 72 hours. Organ Donation is such a noble cause, it’s heartening to see that people have responded so warmly to it.”
