Pune: The police have found 19 aborted female foetuses dumped near a stream at Mhaisal village in Sangli district on Sunday. The foetuses were wrapped in plastic bags.
The police stumbled upon the foetuses while investigating the case of a 26-year-old pregnant woman who had died during an abortion procedure on February 28. Sangli SP Dattatray Shinde said the woman was taken to the abortion clinic by her husband because she was believed to be carrying a baby girl.
On March 1, Swati Jamdade (26) died during an abortion procedure at Miraj. Sunil Jadhav, Swati’s father lodged a complaint against her husband, Pravin Jamdade, and Dr Babasaheb Khidrapure in whose hospital the abortion was carried out, police said.
According to FIR lodged by Jadhav, Pravin called him on February 28 saying Swati was pregnant with a girl child and he was taking her to Khidrapure’s hospital for abortion. The couple already had two daughters. Although Jhadav had requested his son-in-law not to go for abortion, he went ahead. During the operation, Swati’s condition deteriorated. She was shifted to another hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Instead of taking Swati’s body for post-mortem examination, Pravin went for the last rites. This made the villagers suspicious who informed police. Shinde said, “While carrying out a probe at Khidrapure’s hospital, police found that Khidrapure and his wife were illegally carrying out abortions for over 10 years.”
He added, “One of the witnesses showed the place where the foetuses were being dumped. When we went there, we found 19 foetuses wrapped in plastic bags.”
