Mumbai : In the legislative Council, on the very first day of the budget session, minister for revenue and relief and rehabilitation Eknath Khadse announced that 1,053 villages in Ahmednagar and Solapur districts would be added to the list of drought-hit villages of the state.
An aggressive Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were trying to pressurise the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena treasury benches into including names of farmers who have committed suicides in the Condolence Motion moved by leader of the house revenue minister Eknath Khadse.
Opposition members led by Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde in the legislative council said that as a tribute to farmers who have committed suicide in the last one year, the House should pay its respects to them as well.
The on-site estimated crop yield has been found to be below 50 paise and hence 408 villages in Ahmednagar district and 645 villages in Solapur district have been declared as drought hit, the minister said.
With this announcement, concessions like relief in land revenue, 33.5 percent concession in power tariff bills for agricultural pumps, fee waiver for school and college students, deploying tankers in villages facing drinking water scarcity, continuing power supply to agricultural pumps in drought hit villages, stay on recovering agricultural loans and restructuring agricultural loans would be enforced in these 1,053 villages. These measures have been in force in 15,747 villages declared drought hit.
