New Delhi: The Supreme Court asked the government to refrain from taking coercive measures against Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt Ltd if the automobile giant did not pay the Rs 5 billion fine imposed on it by the National Green Tribunal for alleged violations of environmental norms.  Germany-based Volkswagen AG’s wholly-owned Indian subsidiary has already deposited Rs 1 bn. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Volkswagen India, said the company was being penalised on the basis of a set of laws that did not exist in India in the first place.
