Mumbai : Tata Interactive has created a new initiative called ‘Tata ClassEdge’, through which it plans to upgrade the skills of both teachers and students.

‘Tata ClassEdge’ hopes to touch the lives of 10 million students by 2025.  Currently, at any given time, around 650,000 students use the educational programmes that Tata Interactive has created for students.  These are offered through some 13,000 classrooms across the country.

The subjects that the company is focussed on are Maths, Science, Social Sciences and languages.

In an exclusive interaction with The Free Press Journal newspaper, Nirav Khambhati, CEO, Tata ClassEdge said, “The Management of ‘Tata’ has only one focus ‘How many lives have we touched.”

Tata ClassEdge offers these courses to private schools at nominal costs of around Rs.1500/- per classroom but for government run schools, or schools run by NGOs, ClassEdge offers these facilities free of cost, as part of its social commitment.

Tata ClassEdge is aware that teachers also require upgradation of skills in order to use interactive study aids in the classroom.  One way to get over the technophobia that many teachers have is by designing teaching aids that follow the same intuitive interfaces that smartphones offer.

Most courses are designed in a modular manner.  So a teacher can do Level 1, and then move on to the next level.  This also helps many teachers to upgrade their skills one step at a time.

The Tata group had identified this issue over 25 years back and back then it had the vision to develop a training system to make education more interesting, by innovative training methods but once Mr. Cyrus Mistry became the chairman of the Tata group, this vision was further sharpened and concrete goals were set out.

In 2011 Tata Interactive launched ‘Class Edge’, a comprehensive learning solution for Indian Schools to address the need to make education more relevant and interesting. ‘Tata ClassEdge’ is a not for profit company that focuses on instruction design. Based on the NCERT curriculum from KG to 12th standard, it has a repository of digital resources and content that empowers teachers in schools to train students the prescribed education curriculum in innovative ways. For pre-primary schools, it empowers teachers using animated interactions that engage and stimulate children and simplify abstract concepts. The Educational products include virtual Labs, special needs education tools, mathematics education tools (SPARKMath), and instructional courseware.

Having won 100 international awards, Tata Interactive features among the Top 20 content development companies for the last five years and the Top 20 training outsourcing companies globally for the last six years.
