States owe Rs 31k-cr to power producers

UP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka account for 61% of the total dues to power producers

Mumbai : In September 2017, the total outstanding electricity bills of Indian states stood at Rs 26,279 crore. But this figure has bloated to Rs 31,143 crore in March 2018, according to a CARE ratings’ report. Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka account for 61 per cent of the total dues to power producers.

As per the data, CARE rating gathered from PRAAPTI (payment ratification and analysis in power procurement for bringing transparency in invoicing of generators) app, Uttar Pradesh leads with Rs 5,093 crore of outstanding dues in March 2018. The UP and Madhya Pradesh saw an increase in dues by over Rs 1,600 crore and Rs 1,040 core, respectively.

State-owned NTPC is the single largest power producer that has to reach Rs 8,454 crore of outstanding dues.

“Independent power producers (Private Power Producers) were owed 49.6 per cent of the total outstanding dues followed by NTPC (34.8 per cent), Damodar Valley Corporation (8.8 per cent) and the remaining to NHPC, SJVNL, DVC etc,” stated CARE ratings. Among other Independent Power Producers (IPPs)— Adani Power, Sembcorp, JSPL, DB Power and JP Associates are the other generation companies which are collectively owed Rs 11,450 crore (approxiamtely) of dues by discoms.
